I was brought up in a culturally devoid backwater in Northern Ireland and wedged between my sisters happy hardcore and brothers heavy metal. During the mid-nineties, I found a love for soul-edged, electronically created music. At the time, this mainly comprised leftfield electronica and hip-hop - It wasnt until 2004 that I started my love affair with house music, and 2006 before I started djing for myself.
During 2007, I found my niche playing a mixture of vocal tech house, luscious deep house and melodic minimal at Sunday afternoon parties. And so started my rise to dj fame...
I mostly avoid the dirty/electro-house scene: forget in-your-face production, big build-ups and the now-ubiquitous excessive use of the CDJ loop function; I prefer to take my audience on a soulful, subtle, undulating adventure where the music does the talking, not my ego!
While I dj house, my influences are covered by a plethora of different genres. Music that has made me sit up and go 'wow' includes... Underworld, Fragile State, DJ Shadow, Cinematic Orchestra, Mos Def, MJ Cole, Nine Inch Nails, Red Snapper, Ziggy Kinder, Tortured Soul, People Under the Stairs, Plej, Jaga Jazzist, Masters at Work, MC Solaar, Osunlade, Kanye West, Massive Attack, The Streets, Eminem, Hybrid, 4Hero, Ruby, Red Hot Chili Peppers, early Jamiroquai, Jimpster, The Rurals, Spirit Catcher, Ben Watt's Buzzin Fly stuff... and a whole host of house music on the likes of the Defected, Soul Heaven and (dare I say it?!) Hed Kandi labels. |
