| This is a mix I did for Muttley's (AKA Dastardly Exposure - myspace.com/dastardlyexposure) "15 Minutes of Fame" series. Every now and then, certain DJs on his list are selected to submit a mix that is between 15 and 40 minutes long, with a key aim of showcasing of their track selection - moreso than their technical ability. As it stands, the guidelines suggest "no more than ten tracks". But after discussing my idea for "Vignettes" in greater detail, Muttley was happy to see the rules bent for what was planned. I had voiced an intention to choose tracks that were under two minutes long as a way to demonstrate it is possible to compile a mix with great depth despite the short lengths of the individual tracks. Also, I always have enjoyed listening to tracks such as Brian McBride's "Prelude", Max Richter's "Horizon Variations", Donnacha Costello's "That Empty Feeling" and Boards Of Canada's "Constants Are Changing" because they contain so much emotion in such a short amount of time. Picking the tracks for this mix wasn't easy because normally when I do an ambient or downtempo mix the main focus is to let the tracks breathe. Due to the short length it was difficult to try and make everything progress in a logical way, but I think it turned out really well. |
